Retainer Instructions

Your First 3-6 Months After Orthodontic Treatment

After completing your orthodontic treatment, it is important to wear your retainers consistently for the first 3 months. During this period, it is recommended to wear them day and night, removing them only for meals and brushing your teeth. Once three months have passed, you can transition to wearing your retainer only at night. Remember, if you want to maintain your smile’s alignment, it is crucial to continue wearing your retainer every night indefinitely. Neglecting to wear your retainers consistently can cause your teeth to shift, rendering the retainers ineffective.

Typically, retainers can last up to two years, but it’s important to note that some individuals may inadvertently wear out their retainers sooner. This often occurs due to habits such as teeth grinding or clenching, which is prevalent in over 85% of the population, often without their knowledge or awareness. Additionally, the first retainer tray may be more prone to stretching as it is initially worn for 22 out of 24 hours during the first three months after completing orthodontic treatment. Other uncommon factors can also contribute to early stretching of retainers. For example, not using your retainer daily or other undisclosed reasons. Regardless of the cause, any deviation from the recommended usage can result in teeth shifting, even if you faithfully wear your retainer as instructed.

Every 6 Months

We recommend replacing your duplicate retainer every six months. If you notice that the new retainers feel noticeably tighter, it indicates that your current set has stretched. To prevent irreversible teeth shifting, it is important to switch to a new set of retainers in a timely manner.

If you only have one set of retainers, it becomes difficult to determine if your teeth have shifted until you observe the change in your smile. Unfortunately, by that point, it is already too late. While getting a new scan or impression for new retainers can prevent further shifting, it cannot revert your teeth back to the position where you were most satisfied with your smile.

To address these concerns, we recommend opting for Vivera retainers. With Vivera, you receive four sets of retainers, and your scan is saved on file for future reference (additional fees may apply for future sets). This allows for greater convenience and ensures that you can maintain the desired alignment of your teeth effectively.

Every 6 Months

When you’re ready to replace, we encourage you to reach out to us for further information on upgrading from your current single set retainer. Your smile is valuable, and we want to ensure it remains well-protected. Our advanced solution, Vivera, will be offered after a thorough scanning process.

In addition, please inform us when you begin using your last set of Vivera retainers. It’s important to always have a backup on hand. If you have had no major dental work and have been correctly following the instructions above, you will likely not need a new scan/impression.
